Robot: Skeleton Rig

After Jordan had done the majority of the remodel on Henri's robot I was given the low poly so I could build the rig for the animation. I used the quick rig feature in Maya which worked very well. The skeleton comes complete with IK/FK switch for the arms and legs. Something I didn't know before properly rigging the robot is that if the arm is over extended the legs will automatically bend. Something that I find pretty interesting. The skeleton is a weird shape because the robot is very hunched over but even know there are many right angle joints the rig still works well.

The only thing the quick rig did not include is finger controls so I had to do this manually. I added a joint for each finger and parent constrained that to the wrist control so it would follow the direction of the hand. I added my own control to the hand and used set driven keys to drive the curl of each finger as well as the spread so the palm can be closed. All in all it works well and serves the purpose for our animation, even if it is a little simple.
